Mobile skilling centres: India's way to prosperity

Abstract

The 20th century saw the global emergence of India’s foremost technical institutes, Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), but the 21st century requires development of India’s leading skilling institutes, the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). This was the key message of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the launch of ‘Skill India’, an initiative to give impetus to skill training and entrepreneurship. Today, almost half the Indian population constitutes women, and if there is a way forward for the country concerning economic development, it is by way of increasing the participation of women in the workforce.
